Consistency of Personality

Definition

Showing up with the same work ethic, attitude, and approach every single day regardless of what is happening in your life outside the work. It's the absence of mood-driven performance swings. Over a long career, consistency of personality is a more reliable predictor of success than occasional peak performance.

Origin

Ryan Murphy attributes the framing to Nathan Adrian, a US Olympic gold medalist who trained in Ryan's group. In Ep. 22, Ryan recalls: "Nathan was so consistent every single day. You had no idea what was going on in his life, it didn't matter. He showed up with a consistent approach every single day, worked super hard. So that consistency of personality, that consistency of work ethic is something that I really look up to."

Application

Ryan applies this to sourcing as a directly actionable principle: "The greatest indicator of long-term success is consistency over time. My goal is to just be consistent in hard work, and over time the improvement's gonna be there."

In deal sourcing, consistency of personality manifests as: - Same cadence of outreach regardless of recent wins or losses - Same quality of preparation for every call, not just the "important" ones - Same warmth and engagement with every intermediary, not just the ones likely to produce near-term deals - Same discipline with CRM hygiene and follow-through
