Sea of Alternatives

Definition

A visual metaphor for the overwhelming number of private equity and growth equity firms competing for the same deals. Jake Colognesi describes a slide he shows his team: a literal sea with every PE firm name listed underneath in font so small it's unreadable.

Origin

Introduced by Jake Colognesi in Ep. 20. Used during a team offsite to illustrate why differentiation matters — and why LPs ask "how on earth is your email getting responded to?"

Application

The Sea of Alternatives frames the core sourcing challenge: in a market with hundreds of nearly identical firms, generic outreach is invisible. The concept motivates Value-First Outreach — if you look like everyone else, you need to show up differently. Jake argues the answer is being more human and more helpful, not more automated.
